Black Gay Men: Stopping HIV at In the Meantime Men’s Group

NoMoreDownLow.TV was at the historic night club Jewel’s Catch One for a town hall meeting, sponsored by “In The Meantime Men’s Group” (ITMT), to raise awareness and search for solutions to a complicated issue; how to reduce the HIV infection rates by 50% in Los Angeles County. The town hall was part of ITMT’s ongoing “Brothers Reaching Brothers” series. Mario Perez, Director of the Los Angeles County Division of HIV & STD Programs, was honored for his commitment and advocacy. The first portion of the discussion was on how to keep black gay and bisexual men from testing positive for the HIV virus. Other issues discussed were: How to encourage black gay and bisexual men to get tested for HIV? How to get them to follow-up on their tests? How to get them to see a doctor, and how to get them to continue their treatment? The ideas were documented and some of the suggestions will be implemented during the 2012 calendar year. No More Down-Low is a wonderful title. I’m not sure how this “No More Down-Low” state will ever be reached with the black church being so condemning and thus perpetuate behavior that is very disastrous for our community.

I agree with the comment regarding black churches being condemning instead of being able to simply discourse on the subject. I am a member of a very upward moving predominately black congregation. I attempted one evening at a meeting to discourse regarding homosexuality being open about my past lifestyle (and to be honest current) involvement in the LGBTQ Community. Needless to say the conversation took a very condemning and negative turn.
